Why They Chose Hingham

The Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative (DSNI) is a non-profit, resident-run organization in Roxbury, Massachusetts. They were founded over 35 years ago in response to disinvestment, blight, and arson that had ravaged Dudley Street. Their mission is to empower residents to take charge of their community’s development and create a vibrant, diverse neighborhood. Notably, DSNI is one of the first community organizations to gain eminent domain authority, allowing them to control development and land use. Today, the once garbage-strewn lots have been rebuilt with quality affordable houses, parks, playgrounds, gardens, community facilities, and new businesses. The team has excelled in creating greater civic participation, economic opportunity, community connections, and opportunities for youth.
